Suspected Mail Thief Arrested

Mail Thief

Jonathan Gonzalez with 9News writes:

Police have arrested a woman who is believed to have been stealing mail in the Highlands area.

The woman, whose identity has not been released, is believed to have been caught stealing mail on surveillance video on Wednesday.

“It’s a violation of your privacy, right? No one should have their fingers in your mailbox,” homeowner Allison Earnest said. “It’s really frustrating and it’s especially frustrating when it’s in the middle of the day.”

Earnest set up a surveillance camera right above her mailbox to see if she could catch a potential thief.

What she found surprised her.

“She basically waddles her way to our front door, digs and finds a package that’s more substantial than an envelope or a magazine,” Earnest said. “We captured a really great video of a suspect doing something illegal. Not to mention, it’s a federal offense to steal mail.”

The United States Postal Service says more 2,200 people were convicted of stealing mail in 2013. It’s a federal felony punishable by up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
